Chimney Swifts in Richlands
After learning at the BCBC meeting from Linda and Roger Mayhorn that a large number of migrating Chimney Swifts are seen at Grundy High School each year in mid September, I decided to investigate the possibility of Richlands High School may have the same type of migration. Checking on Thursday through Saturday at 7: 30-8:00 PM, I counted the following estimated numbers of Swifts: 500 (Thursday), 1500 (Friday) and 2500 (Saturday). Friday night’s (9/15/17) football game bright lights brought four Common Nighthawks into the “tornado” like swirl of Swifts over the chimney.
I texted my wife on Friday night: “You need to see this. The sky is full of birds. Awesome!”.
Saturday night I decided to make a more accurate count of the birds. With the help of a bystander (Mr. Keen), we counted the swifts as they entered the chimney. The count was at the least conservative in a 30 minute period. Each night the entering of the chimney came to a sudden halt.

Only 24 Broadwings showed up in the miles of starkly blue sky at Birch Knob on Saturday, September 23, but the feeder flocks of migrants, the incredible views from the tower, and the jovial company made for a great day.
Ed got some beautiful photos of the landscape.
